Darlington Orchestra said recession has limited numbers

AN orchestra is looking for new players after losing a large number of players because of the recession.

Darlington Orchestra has said several of its members can no longer attend practice sessions because of changes in shift patterns.

Some members have also retired from the band and illness has affected numbers.

Conductor David Plews said: "We've been pleased to welcome a number of new players to the orchestra recently but at the same time we've been sad to lose an even larger number of players.

"The recession has affected us. Some of us are having to work longer hours, others have had shift patterns changed which prevents them attending evening rehearsals and several players have moved south for jobs.

"The situation has been made worse by a couple of players deciding to retire recently and serious illness affecting several others.

"We are a community orchestra that remains very excited about the future a large amount of new music has recently been donated to us.

"We're looking forward to our next concert on Saturday, July 3. But we have vacancies in every major section and would love to hear from string players, oboists, bassoonists, percussionists and brass players who enjoy the challenge of playing film music, classical, contemporary, light music and new commissions."
