Candidates on attack after Darlington MP's expenses order

CANDIDATES hoping to replace Alan Milburn as Darlington MP have gone on the attack after it was revealed he had to pay back thousands of pounds in expenses.

Last week, The Northern Echo reported that Mr Milburn had returned £11,000 of wrongly claimed expenses for mortgage interest and council tax claims on his second home in London.

Mr Milburn, who lives in Northumberland and is standing down at the next General Election, said he was deeply embarrassed and blamed careless administration.

Last night, Tory parliamentary candidate Edward Legard said: “Alan Milburn will not be held to account by the people of Darlington for taking taxpayers’ money to which he was not entitled.

“He has cleverly stepped aside before that can happen.

“Mr Milburn attributes his £11,000 over-claim to careless administration.

“Ordinary people in Darlington will simply not accept this as an excuse.

“Anyone accused of taking £11,000 in similar circumstances would not have had the luxury of avoiding pun- By David Roberts david.roberts@nne.co.uk ishment by pleading careless administration.

“They would have ended up facing a jury.

“Mr Milburn’s former personal assistant is now standing in his place.

“I look forward to her public and unequivocal condemnation of her former boss.”

Mr Legard was referring to Jenny Chapman, Labour’s parliamentary candidate. She worked as a researcher for Mr Milburn until she left in 2002 to have a baby.

Despite her political allegiance, she also criticised Mr Milburn, and said: “Alan Milburn has been a hardworking local MP, who wanted the best for Darlington. Having said that, there are things I would do differently.

“I disagreed at the time, and disagree now, with Alan moving out of Darlington.

“I am shocked and feel let down by all of the hundreds of MPs who have abused the expenses system, such as it was.

“We need a new generation of MPs with more energy and a new attitude. I will always live in Darlington because it is my home and where I grew up.

“I also promise that I will never abuse any future expenses system and that I will publish details of anything I claim.”

Lib Dem candidate Mike Barker said: “I do not think he has devoted himself to the town the way he should have done in the past few years, and it now appears he has been milking the system for all he is worth.

“Most people will be glad to see the back of him.

“Given the amount of time he has spent in Darlington on his job in the last few years, he should be paying back half his salary as well.”

Three Labour MPs get charged (well, criminal summons-ed which is the same), and Labour doesn't even suspend the whip. It's time to boot them out; they've gone rotten.

You expect HONESTY from a Labour politician !!!!!!!!, Thats stretching it a bit, You dont find honesty, morality, accuracy, decency or any other positive atribute any where near those types of people.

MPs of both major parties and also the Lib Dems were caught in the expenses scandal. I assume then that people like SuperSteve will not be voting Tory either?

All three parties have had their problems, but the Conservatives have shown themselves to be the most active about it. Labour are too sluggish (it's time to de-elect them, they took TOO LONG to suspend the whip from their implicated MPs) and the Lib Dems will never get enough votes.

Oh, and the last thing we need is Labour's socialism-based distorted morals and misguided "equality" bill (more like positive discrimination bill; positive discrimination is still discrimination).

It could improve his image slightly if he were to donate his golden resettlement payout of £60k plus to some of our local charities who do more good for the community in one week than he has ever done as a part time MP

Milburn blamed "careless administration" --- that'll be the same "careless administration" that's been running the Country for the past 13 years.

Why does Milburn need a resettlement payment? He has chosen to live away from Darlington for a number of years for family reasons so he is obviously in no need of any payment to move again.

All these Labour MP's are bloody useless, I had that Phil Wilson at my front door, I think it was last year wanting me to confirm I'd vote Labour. No chance!
He asked me if I had any concerns & I said "yeah, the lack of good well paid manufaturing companies etc on Aycliffe trading estate. Also that decent well paid places like Eaton Corp had relocated to Poland." His rely was some rubbish about the recent global financial crisis causing this! I said that Eaton's closed in 2001!
He sounded to me like he didn't have a clue about Aycliffe, apart from the fact that Labour always expects to do well here. When I questioned him about why under Labour, the industrial estate is half empty he couldn't get out of my garden fast enough.
