Youngsters will form largest choir ever to sing in Durham Cathedral

HUNDREDS of young voices from across the North-East will be raised in unison tonight in aid of a teenage cancer charity centre.

More than 300 pupils from ten independent schools will perform in the concert collectively, creating the largest choir ever to sing in Durham Cathedral, from 7pm.

Members of nearby Durham Chorister School’s Galilee Choir were putting the finishing touches to their performance in a final practice in the shadow of the cathedral, yesterday.

The concert includes works by Karl Jenkins, Handel, Walton and Durham city’s Will Todd, the acclaimed 30-year-old pianist and classical composer.

Singers and musicians taking part are from The Chorister School, Durham School and Durham High School for Girls, all Durham; Hurworth House School and Polam Hall School, in the Darlington area; Barnard Castle School; Red House School, at Norton; Teesside High School, at Eaglescliffe; Yarm School; and Sunderland High School.

Proceeds will go to the £1.7m re-development of the teenage cancer unit at the Great North Children’s Hospital, at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.

Among the ushers at tonight’s concert will be Laurence Whiteley, from Polam Hall School, who has been treated by the unit’s doctors.
