RESIDENTS are hopeful that new restrictions can be introduced to slow down speeding lorries in their neighbourhood.
People living in Harrowgate Hill have long complained about HGVs racing down Burtree Lane.
Darlington Borough Council has been monitoring traffic on the route after local residents drew up a petition.
Local councillor Gill Cartwright said residents are hopeful that the evidence collected will lead to new speeding restrictions being put in place.
Recent surveys show that 85 per cent of traffic travels at around 40mph - 10mph over the speed limit.
Coun Cartwright said: "This clearly shows what residents knew all along, that there is a significant speeding issue on Burtree Lane.
"It is currently one of our priorities from our Police And Community Together (PACT) meetings and now that we have the figures to back us up we hope that the police will react quickly to this problem.
"We are going to ask the police at next months PACT meeting to bring a community speed watch programme into the area.
"We understand that these schemes have worked successfully in other areas and we are keen to see the benefits this can bring for our own community."
