Last chance for say on green issues

TIME is running out for Darlington residents who want to help influence Government environment policy.

Following Darlington Borough Council’s decision to opt into the Government's Sustainable Communities Act, anyone in the town can submit their ideas for improving the area and these could become government policy.

But all ideas must be received by July 8.

The ideas should be about providing the council with new powers, so suggestions should be something outside the council’s remit.

Anyone with an idea should look at the evaluation criteria on-line at www.darlington.gov.uk to check it meets these, then e-mail it to the on-line forum, which can also be accessed on-line.

People can speak to Councillor Andy Scott, the council's cabinet member for communities and engagement, at a drop-in session at eVOLution, formerly the Council for Voluntary Service, in Church Row on Monday, from 4pm to 6.30pm.

After the deadline, council officers will look at the ideas from local people and decide which ones should go forward to full council for discussion in July. Members will then decide which ones to submit to the Local Government Association (LGA).

The LGA must select the best ideas to put forward to the Secretary of State on August 1, who will have the final say on which proposals are implemented.

Coun Scott said: "This really is an excellent opportunity for people here in Darlington to shape national government policy for the benefit of the borough. So, if anyone has any ideas about what needs improving or what we should be doing differently, they should get in touch."

For more information contact the council's Connecting with Communities team on 01325-388023.

Can the Echo now put a lid on these people who keep writing to the Echo saying they want wheelie bins that help the environment, another one today. Read the Town Crier please (and you might know what's going on in D'ton). From Sep 7 John Wade take over refuse and all borough refuse (in black bags) is taken to the biological treatmen plant which separates waste. John Wade has this contract for 11 years so if you want a wheelie bin and fortnightly collection like elsewhere who have w.bins) go and buy one, though you will still need black bags to prevent your bin stinking, and if someone sets fire to your bin as often happens the burning plastic emits posionous fumes. And if you think you can leave your wheelie bin lying about you are wrong. Redcar Council has just been fining people who don't bring their bins in after refuse collections. And how does a big truck taking ages to pick up and set down bins every few yards help the environment? At the moment the council cleans the alleys after refuse collections. Much easier to do, than having wheelie bins shot over the place by yobs, which happens to those in suburbia as well as in the poor wards where there are wheelie bins.

May I suggest a reduction in council vehicles; this would reduce CO2 emissions, reduce cost and achieve a fitter and healthier work force.

Enforce car parking fees on all council town hall staff, this would also give them an opportunity to gain first hand experience of Darlington public transport and the main bus routes or alternatively they could cycle or walk, reducing CO2 emissions and gaining a fitter and healthier work force.
