THE next generation of politicians got a taste of how democracy works during a visit to Darlington Town Hall.

Harrowgate Hill Primary School’s student council held their January meeting in the council chamber before learning about what goes on at the town hall and how democracy works.

The youngsters had a question and answer session with Darlington mayor Councillor Ian Haszeldine and learned about the history of the office.

The also created the perfect councillor by deciding on which qualities were most important for a politician to have and went on a treasure trail of the building.

The 19 pupils, who are aged between five and 11, were accompanied by three members of staff for the visit on Thursday.

Each child was given a pin badge as a memento of the trip.

Teacher Katy Harrison, who organised the visit, said: “They loved it. It was a very worthwhile experience and a really good day.”
