NEVER in our wildest dreams did we think we would be bringing you a series of articles about cast iron garden rollers bought from Binns of High Row, Darlington.
In a previous article, we told of the Sandringham roller owned by Mike Lee of Blackwell which had “H Binns Son & Co Ltd Darlington” cast on its handle. The name of the company dated that roller from between 1897 to 1934 when the company was restyled Binns Ltd.
Therefore Kevin Portues’ roller must be after 1934. On one side of its handle it says that it is a “Dalecast” roller – a fairly well known make, if you are into vintage garden rolling apparatus – and on the other side it says “Binns Ltd Darlington”.
Kevin, a gardener from Coxhoe, was given the roller about five years ago. Just like Mike’s Sandringham so Kevin’s Dalecast must have been chosen from the garden department on High Row – are there any other items of Binns gardenware still in existence?
