HEALTH issues are being tackled by a walking programme delivered as part of an NHS initiative.

Groundwork NE and Cumbria are developing the Red Hall Walking Programme in Darlington to improve residents’ health.

The town was selected as one of the ten areas across the country to take part in the Healthy New Towns programme. It is designed to develop housing, health and communities.

Red Hall Community Centre trustee Martin Landers said: “I think this project is fantastic for Red Hall residents – regular activity is key and important to physical and mental health.

“This initiative will enable people to be more active, live healthy lifestyles and enjoy a better quality of life.”

Groundwork community project manager Natalie Whitworth hopes the whole community will come along to the walks and enjoy them with their family.

She said: “We hope that by the end of the walking programme, we will have a varied programme of walks delivered by volunteer walk leaders.

“It will be supported by Groundwork staff through an effective community-based approach encouraging people to walk.”

The organisation will support residents to attend walk leader training and encourage residents to lead walks of their own on Red Hall.

The programme is in the initial planning stages but will come together once research has been completed on what Red Hall residents would like to gain from the programme.
