A CHARITY is looking for support to help it win a share of £250,000 to create a new garden area.

Headway Darlington is calling for support from the local community to help win a share of the Jewson Building Better Communities prize fund.

The charity, which was established in June 2013, supports brain injury survivors and their families once discharged from hospital, and now needs votes in order for it to secure a share of the prize, which can be spent on building materials.

Using its prize, Headway Darlington will create a garden area with seating and raised vegetable beds, to help rebuild members’ confidence.

To go forward in the competition, Headway Darlington now need votes as the prizes will be allocated based on the results of the public vote, as well as recommendations from an industry judging panel.

Voting closes tomorrow, so the charity is looking for some last minute help in order to win a share of the prize.

Headway Darlington aims to reduce isolation by those impacted by brain injury, as well as increase self-esteem and self worth and prevent and reduce depression and other mental health impacts.

Thierry Dufour, managing director at Jewson, said: “Since we launched the Building Better Communities competition in 2015, we’ve seen first-hand the incredible work that community groups and tradespeople are doing across the UK.

"They are making a huge difference in their local areas and we want to give back to them, which is why we are urging residents in Darlington to cast their vote and support a local cause that could benefit from a helping hand.”

The Building Better Communities initiative rewards both community projects and heroes of the building trade.

Jewson will award one community project up to £50,000, as well as many smaller prizes to other projects.

It will also give away £100,000 of the overall fund to tradespeople who go above and beyond in their local area, or builders who have always supported others but now find themselves in need.

Since 2015, Jewson has donated £600,000 worth of building materials to help transform more than 68 community-run projects.

The winning projects will be announced on Tuesday, July 3 at a ceremony hosted by architect George Clarke.

Mr Clarke said: “The funds donated as part of the Building Better Communities initiative have already made a huge difference to local charities and community groups, and can do the same for Headway Darlington.
