CHILDREN at Red Hall Primary School enjoyed a World of Work Day hosted by Darlington’s Foundation for Jobs.

Pupils from year five and six were encouraged to take part in practical activities to give them a better understanding of the careers.

Stalls were set up in the school’s gym where children could ask questions about the roles and gain practical experience.

Owen McAteer, the Foundation for Job’s co-ordinator said: “The idea of the World of Work Days is to give young people a better understanding of different jobs that are out there, what we’re trying to do today is not so much give them a career talk, it’s more to get them involved in a fun activity so they take away a positive impression of these careers.

“The uptake of STEM subjects in the north-east is one of the lowest in the UK, if we are going to build a successful economy over the coming decades, we really need more young people doing these things.

“We want to thank all the companies here today as we wouldn’t have been able to put on the event without them.”

The organisations taking part in the careers event included manufacturing firm 3M and Keepmoat Homes Ltd.
