SELFLESS young people living and learning in Darlington are being honoured with a round of awards to celebrate their altruistic side.

Darlington Rotary Club rewarded eight youngsters nominated for recognition by their schools as part of Austin Brooks Youth Day.

A club spokeswoman said: "We ask schools to nominate someone in their final year of compulsory education who embodies the Rotary ideal of 'service above self'.

"The testimonials the schools provide are a powerful reminder of how many selfless, modest and immensely caring young people we have in our town.

"Every one of the Award winners was a true unsung hero and greatly valued by their school communities."

This year's Austin Brooks winners were Jeanne Jose of Carmel College collected an award, alongside Nathanial Moxon-McEwan at St Aidan’s Church of England Academy, Hummersknott Academy's Rebecca Potter and Wyvern Academy's Alex Wintel.

Haughton Academy's Callum Shorten, Hurworth School's Benjamin English, Polam Hall School's Rana Rassem and Beaumont Hill Academy's Cameron Barlow were also honoured.
