TEACHERS at Firthmoor Primary School have been overwhelmed by the generosity of children and parents in a toy appeal.

The donations began when Alison Walker heard about TFM Radio’s Mission Christmas Toy Appeal, and wanted to get the school involved.

Mrs Walker and teaching assistant, Claire Smithurst, were inspired by the toy appeal and invited parents and children to contribute to the cause.

As a teacher of year groups 5 and 6, Mrs Walker said: “We’ve been astounded by what we’ve received. We didn’t think we’d get as much as we’ve got here.

“Even now we’ve just had a little boy come in, open his book bag up, and donate some toys.”

The appeal is in aid of Cash for Kids who are looking for donations of new, unwrapped toys to help over 47,000 disadvantaged children up to the age of 18 this Christmas.

Mrs Smithurst said: “When you hear the children saying to you ‘this is for the kids that have got nothing’, we’ve been really overwhelmed by the response.

“Even just from a pack of pencils to a big gift, someone is bringing something in and that’s their kindness showing.”

Further donations can be made at local B&M and Wickes stores until Sunday, December 17.
