Darlington manager Tommy Wright will be emphasising to his players ahead of tonight’s FA Buildbase Trophy third qualifying round tie how much an appearance at Wembley will mean to them.

Wright’s last touch of a ball as a Darlington player in his second spell was to head against the crossbar in the 2011 FA Trophy final, then poacher Chris Senior was quickly first to the rebound and headed the ball home for the winner against Mansfield at Wembley.

The 33 year old says that playing and winning at Wembley was the highlight of his career, and he wants his players to sample the experience of playing at the Arch.

“I’ve watched that goal over and over again – not as many times as Chris Senior though! “he said. “It was a fantastic day all round. I didn’t feel sharp enough, which was why I missed those chances in the final!

“That day had a big positive effect on me, and I have massive respect for an FA Trophy run. Every season, wherever I’ve been a manager, I explain to the players how much it means for a footballer to appear at Wembley, and there’s no reason why our lads can’t get there. Clubs from our division have done well in the past, just a few years ago North Ferriby got to the final and beat Wrexham. This club over the last few years has enjoyed success, so we know what winning feels like and we should remember how hard we had to work to enjoy that success. “

Wright is looking for his first win since taking over from Martin Gray, and he said; “I couldn’t think of a better way than tonight. I will ensure that the lads are up for the occasion.”

Wright will give new signing Reece Styche his debut tonight after signing him from Tamworth last weekend. Styche has scored ten already this season in National League North, and many feel that if he was playing last Saturday, then he would have scored at least two of the chances that were created.

“The main thing that attracted me to Darlington was Tommy,” he told the club’s official website. “I’ve known him since we were at Forest Green, and we used to travel together. He took me to Nuneaton on loan and he was a main part in me enjoying my football again. Tommy has looked after me, Darlington get big crowds and shouldn’t be in this league, I’m excited to come and play for him.

“I enjoyed my football the most at Forest Green when Dave Hockaday was manager, and when a manager believes in you like Tommy, you play your best football. I had a couple of injuries and went off the radar a little bit in terms of scoring, but in the last year or so I’ve found that common ground of enjoying my football and not taking it too seriously. I’m in a good place and hopefully that will continue here as Darlington.

“Gary Brown will say that I’m not a nice bloke to play against, and I’m quite direct as a striker. I like to get into people’s faces and work hard, I love taking people on and getting shots away.

“I want to continue enjoying my football, and if I’m doing that, then everything takes care of itself.”

Quakers are due a good run in the FA Trophy. Since they re-entered the Trophy in 2013, they have played ten games, and have won just four, and have never reached the first round proper. They went out to Marine in a replay last season, and to Sutton Coldfield, St Neots and Buxton in previous seasons.

Centre back Josh Heaton is missing tonight because he has already played for Ramsbottom in the competition, while defender Chris Hunter has an operation next week on his ankle injury.

Quakers have reduced admission prices tonight to £10 for adults, £8 for concessions and £5 for children.
