TIME is running out for youngsters hoping to become Darlington’s next Youth MP.

Young people hoping for the opportunity to represent their peers in Parliament must put themselves forward for the role by Friday.

Ahead of the deadline, Darlington’s current Youth MP Mille Tezcan said the position had changed her life as she urged others to follow in her footsteps.

Ms Tezcan, who took over the role in September after Jess Halliday stepped down to go to university, said her first foray in politics had been a once in a lifetime opportunity as she prepared to hand the reins to her successor.

Throughout her time in the role, she has represented the young people of Darlington in a variety of ways, most recently joining Youth MPs from around the country for an annual debate in the House of Commons, where they argued for a lower voting age and a ‘curriculum for life’.

She said: “Going to Parliament was definitely a once in a life time opportunity.

“I met some other amazing young people, and learned a lot of new things.

“I am glad that the youth voice is so strong, and I hope some amazing things will get done because of it.”

Ms Tezcan added: “I have really enjoyed my experience being Darlington’s Member of Youth Parliament and would advise anybody who wants to make a difference to their community to sign up and give it a go.”

The UK Youth Parliament aims to give those aged between 11 and 18 a voice and the opportunity to be listened to by local, regional and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views of young people.
