A CUP of tea and a chat will go some way towards tackling loneliness, according to those behind a new initiative.

In 2016, research from the Co-op and the British Red Cross found that community groups could help to alleviate problems associated with isolation.

In response to the findings, a new friendship group has been set up by Hope Counselling and Co-op Funeralcare in Cockerton.

You, Me and a Cup of Tea was inspired by a ‘friendship café’ running at a Darlington church where people, many of whom would otherwise be isolated, meet regularly to socialise and enjoy refreshments.

Co-op community champion Hayley Gilbert said: “When we were presented with the research, Co-op Funeralcare and Co-op Food in Darlington decided to look at ways of trying to help and we thought about setting up a friendship group.

“We attended St Mark’s Church Friendship Café and saw the impact the friendship cafe had on the community - many of the attendees told us that if it wasn't for the friendship café they might not leave the house or see another person all day.

“We hope that the group might be the first step for some people to get out in the community to meet new people - everyone is welcome.”

Ms Gilbert said that the informal get together would allow people to enjoy free tea and cake while making new friends.

Hope Counselling’s Samantha and Sean Cotterill will be in attendance to provide support.

You, Me and a Cup of Tea will next take place at Cockerton Methodist Church Hall from 10.30am on Monday, November 27.
