A PLAQUE has been unveiled to celebrate the heritage of Darlington in time for the start of the town's Festival of Ingenuity.

Colin Fyfe, chief executive of Darlington Building Society, unveiled the Black Plaque inside the Dolphin Centre this morning.

The plaque will eventually be on display outside Crombies in the town centre, where the first Darlington Building Society meeting took place.

It was held at the then know Mrs Johnson's Eating House in July 1856.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mr Fyfe said: "Today we are going to start commemorating the heritage in Darlington.

"The plaque will celebrate the first meeting of Darlington Building Society.

"161 years ago, a group of people got together and said how can we do more for the people of Darlington, " he said.

"All those years later, Darlington has a building society it can be really proud of," he added.
