WORK by a popular Yorkshire artist will go under the hammer at a Darlington auction next week.

A watercolour painting titled Overlooking Robin Hood’s Bay by George Weatherill, known as the “Turner of the North”, will be up for auction at Thomas Watson on Tuesday, September 26.

The artist was best known for capturing some of the North East and Yorkshire’s best coastal scenes, particularly around his home town of Whitby.

David Elstob, auctioneer and valuer at Thomas Watson, said: “The paintings that we have in our collection are of scenes around Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend and other surrounding villages so we are expecting a great deal of local interest."

Born in the small fishing village of Staithes, Weatherill spent his entire life in the Whitby area. He worked as a clerk in Chapman’s Bank and remained with the firm until 1860, when, at the age of fifty, he left to become a full-time artist.

All the paintings can be viewed at www.thomaswatson.com or at the auction house on Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 1pm.
