A BUNCH of balloons rose into the air in an emotional tribute to a superstar DJ who “devoted his life to music and the gay scene”.

Music lover Matt Nevin made his mark in the LGBT community and became a well-known music mixer across the North-East before he died last month, aged just 30.

Mr Nevin was found dead in Middlesbrough’s Cube apartments on July 21. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

To commence Darlington’s 2017 Pride event, dozens of balloons were released on Monday night in memory of the much-missed DJ and his impact on the LGBT community.

The emotional memorial was described by friends as “a fitting tribute” to Mr Nevin.

Drag artist Tess Tickle, who helped organise the pride event, worked alongside Mr Nevin in Middlesbrough’s gay scene.

She said: “He was a quiet and shy kind of guy with an amazing passion for music. No matter what the song request was that an audience member would give him, he would make sure it was played to keep everyone happy.

“He was a joy to work alongside, and I truly believe he was a superstar DJ that would one day make it.”

She added: “Losing Matt is a massive blow to each and every one of us personally.

“He was a loyal friend and work colleague, and a much loved talent, taken far too soon. The party scene will miss his unique remixes of all the latest and greatest music.”

Since starting their careers together, the pair continued to stay in touch as Mr Nevin secured a job at Harvey’s Late Bar in Darlington.

Simon Sykes, the managing director of the bar, said: “His music and remixes inspired and touched everybody all over the world. He was part of the Harvey’s family for eight years, and helped shape the Darlington gay community and the Monday night scene.

“Matt was always full of energy and laughter, and had the best fancy dress costumes.”

Earlier this month, the bar held their own celebration for their colleague by holding a fancy dress party in his honour and raising more than £1,500.

The Darlington Pride event was organised by the Darlington Gay collective, and a number of bars and clubs in the area that included Number One Bar, Avalon, Hoskins, Gaylicious, Harvey’s and Inside Out.

Katie Hastings, a good friend of the DJ, said: “[Matt] was always so happy, bubbly and hilarious.

“It was amazing to see how loved and adored Matt was at the memorial and balloon release. The photos and words said about him were just perfect. I love you Matt, and hope you’re at peace now."
