A MAJOR retailer is closing its doors in Darlington town centre and relocating inside a supermarket.

The Argos store on Skinnergate will be closing in October.

The new store, known as Argos Digital, will open in the Sainsbury’s store on Victoria Road on October 25.

The move comes after Sainsbury’s acquired Home Retail Group, which owns Argos, last year.

Bosses at Sainsbury’s confirmed staff would be transferring from the Skinnergate site to the Sainsbury’s store.

They also said the move is part of its strategy to help its customers shop “whenever and wherever they want”.

Ian Wassall, manager at Sainsbury’s Darlington store, said: “Sainsbury’s has been a part of the local community for a number of years and we are really thrilled to welcome Argos and its team to our store.

“The new shop is great for customers, who are looking for easier, more convenient ways to shop.

"We’re looking forward to feedback from customers about the increased range and offer," he added.
