ROADWORKS that involve deep excavations and road resurfacing are due to start next week across Darlington.

Overnight road closures will be in place during operations being carried out on the Northgate and St Cuthbert’s Way roundabout, leading to Darlington town centre, from Monday, July 24.

The roundabout, opposite Marks and Spencers, will be closed to traffic daily from 7pm each night until 6am.

A Darlington Borough Council spokeswoman said: “The works involve deep excavations in the centre of the carriageway, so the road must be closed in the interests of the safety of both the travelling public and workers on site.

“The works will be carried out at night to minimise traffic congestion – a signed diversion route will be in place for the duration of the works.”

Temporary traffic lights will also be in place to control traffic travelling through Piercebridge, on the outskirts of Darlington, while the main road through the village is closed for resurfacing and reconstruction.

Two-way traffic signals will be in place on the road from Monday, July 24, until Friday, July 28, as 600m of the route is resurfaced.

The spokeswoman added: “Traffic cannot be safely accommodated while the resurfacing is taking place and will therefore need to use the signed diversion route via Barton and Darlington A67 during that period.

“Residents of the village have been advised of these works and arrangements have been made for access where appropriate.

“We apologise for any disruption and delays caused by these essential road maintenance works.”
