THOUSANDS of generous dog owners have raised £9,000 during an annual canine fun day in aid of homeless hounds cared for by Dogs Trust Darlington.

The sum was raised during the event hosted in the town’s South Park last week, which included contests to find the best puppy, best golden oldie and most fabulous female.

Pets were microchipped for free by the charity which has its rehoming centre base in Sadberge and has held the annual summer fun day since 1994.

Staff and volunteers have also thanked generous pupils at Whale Hill Primary School, Eston, Middlesbrough, who have donated crocheted blankets to keep puppies warm.

Alison Gray, education and community officer, said: “Whether you give your time, a donation to our cause or adopt or foster a dog from us, we are very grateful for your contribution to the work of Dogs Trust and hope you will continue to help us ensure more people understand dogs are for life, not just for Christmas.”
