THE finest Roman cavalry and infantry battled with Celtic mercenaries on fields surrounding Piercebridge.

And more than 600 people came along to watch the battle unfold next to the River Tees.

As well as the battle re-enactment, families were able to try out wattle fence making, pottery making and guided tours of the historic site over the weekend.

Visitors were transported back in time through an afternoon of activities and attractions, organised by Groundwork NE & Cumbria, Tees Archaeology, Preston Park Museum & Grounds and the Head of Steam Museum, through the River Tees Rediscovered Landscape Partnership and funded by the National Lotteries Heritage Lottery Fund.

Lucy Chapman, partnership manager Groundwork NE & Cumbria, said: "We are delighted to have had the opportunity to share the unique Roman heritage of Piercebridge with so many visitors. We hope to bring the Romans back to the Tees in future years.”

River Tees Rediscovered Landscape Partnership aims to develop the river and surrounding area through conservation and community activities.
