PUPILS at a North-East school are on a roll when it comes to sport.

The youngsters at Hurworth School, near Darlington, were given the opportunity to try a range of new activities as part of National School Sports Week.

By far the most popular was Bubble Football, in which teams of players are strapped into large inflatable plastic bubbles and bounce off each other during matches.

National School Sport Week has been run by the Youth Sports Trust for the past ten years to encourage more children to engage in sport.

Hurworth School has always been a big supporter of the initiative and this year pupils were given the choice of sports including fencing, archery, a military-style boot camp, dance fitness, and Parkour, which is a type of free-running.

Hurworth’s Head of PE, Tony Liddle, said the week had been a huge success, with pupils keen to try the full range of new sports.

“We try to bring in something different from their normal experiences in PE and it’s really successful,” he said.

“In the past, we’ve had pupils going on to join clubs after getting a taste of new sports.

“By far the most popular choice this year was the Bubble Football. It’s the first time we’ve tried it and the children absolutely loved it.

“The feedback from the organisers was also really positive because the pupils’ behaviour was so good.”

The week also featured an inter-house rounders competition, with form classes taking on each other and points going towards the House Cup.
