BADMINTON playing students have raised £1,978 for Comic Relief after helping shoppers with their bags at Darlington’s Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Players and their families from Hummersknott Badminton Club offered to pack for customers in return for a donation.

They were joined by students from Hummersknott Academy, where the club is based, High Coniscliffe Primary School, Carmel College, Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College and Polam Hall.

The badminton club will be undertaking two international tours later this year, to Italy at Easter and a tour of five central European countries in July. In total 52 people joined in the charity venture.

Team captain Richard Smith said: “Many of us have benefitted from the unique international tours possible through fund raising. It is good to put something back into supporting others who are not as privileged as we are.”

Marie Steward, a spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s, said: “I am ever appreciative of the generosity of our customers and the willingness of the students to give up their time for such a worthy cause.”
