THE world of Darlington’s rich railway heritage will be open to autistic visitors to the Head of Steam museum.

A guide has been launched for the site which includes visual guides, lighting levels, sounds and smells to expect on visits to the museum and how staff can be identified.

The autism-friendly booklet was put together after museum staff worked with the North East Autism Society and other Darlington groups to make the site more accessible.

Sarah Gouldsbrough, acting museum manager at the Head of Steam said: “All our staff and volunteers work hard to ensure all our visitors enjoy their time at Head of Steam and want to come back.

“We’re delighted that the new guide is proving a useful addition and look forward to welcoming more visitors to enjoy our ever changing exhibitions and events programme.”

The guide can be borrowed from reception during museum visits or it can be downloaded.
