A PILOT scheme to improve the quality of care for dementia patients staying in Darlington Memorial Hospital is in need of volunteers.

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) launched its therapeutic volunteer initiative last year in the hope of residents dedicating at least one hour per week to helping those in hospital.

As part of the scheme, patients with dementia spend time reminiscing with volunteers using photographs, music and memory boxes, as well as playing card games, reading and drawing.

A CDDFT spokesman said: “The role of the therapeutic volunteers is to help stimulate and to make the patients’ hospital stay as comfortable as possible, by participating and interacting with the patients through an array of activities.”

Anyone volunteering for the initiative will be given therapeutic volunteer training ahead of spending time with Darlington Memorial Hospital patients.
