VOLUNTEERS met at the clock tower in Darlington’s South Park yesterday to undertake a spring clean.
The event was the first in the annual Big Spring Clean, which runs until April 16 and involves community litter picks.
A handful of volunteers turned up to clean up around the park as part of the council-organised event. Last year in Darlington alone 839 people took part in 45 litter picks, collecting 786 bags of rubbish, and 2.5 tons of bulky waste.
Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and the local environment, said: “Due to cuts to our budget we’ve been forced to reduce our street cleaning services and we simply cannot do as much as we did before. So in October, we launched the Our Streets initiative to challenge individuals, community groups, schools and businesses to take greater pride in Our Streets and work together to keep them clean.
