VOLUNTEERS can still sign up to roll their sleeves up and take part in a spring clean across their community.

Thousands of willing hands are preparing to take to the streets of County Durham and Darlington to join the tenth anniversary Big Spring Clean, which is this year part of the wider #OurStreets initiative.

The campaign, staged by LitterFree Durham, in partnership with both Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council, runs for seven weeks.

The first Darlington event takes place tomorrow (Monday).

It will feature a number of litter picks staged across both areas, until Sunday, April 16.

Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and the local environment, said: “It’s great to see so many people pulling together to help and we’d love to see that extended to support the #OurStreets initiative.

The call to arms was backed by Darlington councillor Gerald Lee, from Heighington, who chairs the LitterFree Durham campaign.

“Every year more and more volunteers have signed up to take part in their local community litter picks and I hope this trend continues," he said.

“And, of course, litter is a year-round problem so if people can do their bit, however small, to help #OurStreets, it all adds up.”

Volunteers for the first Darlington community litter pick are asked to meet at the Clock Tower, in South Park, at 10am tomorrow.
