A TOKEN scheme to support community groups and charities in need has awarded hundreds of pounds to life-saving volunteers.

Green tokens handed out at the tills in Asda’s Whinbush Way store, Darlington, have seen shoppers use them to select St John Ambulance to receive £500.

Matthew Todd, St John Ambulance West Durham Unit manager, said: “We’re thrilled to have been chosen and the money will go towards the purchase training equipment, including a casualty simulation kit.

“Our volunteers undergo constant training so that the care they give in the community is of the highest standard and the training equipment we use is extremely important to us.

“We’d like to that the staff and customers at Asda in Darlington for their generosity.

“We get great support from our local community and we’d also be thrilled if anyone would like to volunteer with us.”
