A MURAL commemorating Darlington’s rich history has been unveiled by an artist to bring the town centre to a village on its outskirts.

The colourful creation was revealed yesterday in sheltered housing at Rockliffe Court, in Hurworth, near Darlington.

Residents at the site were joined by Middlesbrough Football Club midfielder, Adam Forshaw, for the unveiling.

Wendy New, the artist behind the mural, said: “The residents wanted the ‘outside in’ and they asked if it could reflect their patio space and their view over Rockliffe Hall.

“I focused on that and Rockliffe’s history on the right-hand side and I merged in the architecture and local landmarks from Darlington as you move along it.

“It includes buildings like the clock tower and the Civic Theatre and the history of the Quaker families who had a hand in a lot of Darlington’s history, like the railways.

“I was trying to tell a story of the local area and the places that people talk about.”
