POLICE officers trying to arrest a man over an incident in a budget hotel got more than they bargained for when he lashed out at them.

Brad-Lee Wilson, of Red Hall, Darlington, had booked a room at the Harrowgate Hill Lodge, just behind the White Horse on North Road in the town, and police were later called to a domestic incident in his room.

Alan Davison, prosecuting at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court, said Wilson resisted arrest, kicking one officer in the waist, then lashing out with both arms, kicking a special constable twice in the leg before holding the door shut, trapping the officer’s hand.

In mitigation, Tom Morgan said Wilson, 20, who admitted resisting a constable, assault by beating and assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty, did not have any previous convictions but admitted it was an “unpleasant” incident.

Wilson was on bail for another matter and had breached his bail conditions that night, he said.

“He just panicked, your worships,” said Mr Morgan. “It was symptomatic of his lack of familiarity with the process.”

One of the officers had to attend hospital for X-rays on his injured hand, but it was not broken.

Wilson was fined £80, ordered to pay £150 compensation, £85 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
