THE first meeting of Darlington’s White Rose movement will be held this weekend.

MP Jo Cox’s death prompted couple Peter and Carol Greenwood to establish the movement, dedicated to combating hate and promoting peace.

White roses are symbolically linked to peaceful resistance and were laid in honour of the MP for Batley and Spen after she was killed by a known racist last year.

During WWII, the White Rose movement in Germany saw intellectuals come together in non-violent opposition of the Nazi regime.

The Darlington initiative will hold its inaugural meeting on Saturday, January 21 from 10am at the library of the Friends Meeting House on Skinnergate.

Mr Greenwood said: “This is a chance to help create White Rose Darlington, to contribute to a better understanding of the people who make up all the multifarious minorities in the town, to take some heat out of the recent rising tide of hate and to honour the life’s work of Jo Cox.”
