A CANADIAN rugby team has thanked Darlington Mayor Brian Jones and other residents for making them feel welcome on a visit to the region.

The Beaconsfield Rugby Football Club, from Montreal in Canada, came on a tour of the region after Christmas, where they played matches against Darlington RFC and Middlesbrough RFC, as well as watching a Newcastle Falcons vs London Wasps game.

They team saved up for two years for a return visit to the region to play some matches against UK teams.

Darlington Mayor Brian Jones spotted the team, who were staying in the Devonport Hotel, out training in Middleton One Row and started chatting to them, welcoming them to the town.

The team enjoyed the hospitality offered by Mr Jones and by Lawrie Ridley, who lives near him, that they gave them presents of maple syrup and “coaches” hats when they left.
