A GLOWING report from Ofsted inspectors has brought smiles to schoolchildren learning in an officially Good-rated primary school.

Gurney Pease Academy, in Darlington, earned high praise from education examiners visiting the site who recognised hard work to improve the school being put in by staff, governors, pupils and their families.

Children at the academy that is based off Dodsworth Street and is part of the Education Village Academy Trust were chosen at random during Ofsted’s visit to speak to the lead inspector.

During the informal meeting, the youngsters showed the inspector their schoolwork in English, maths and other subjects.

Alison Sinclair, Gurney Pease Academy principal, said: “One boy brought in massive Second World War Anderson shelter he had just completed as a homework project and was very proud of.

“It is lovely to know that the efforts of everyone connected with the school have been officially recognised.

“Pupils did us proud on the day, but then they do so every day.”

Within Ofsted’s review of the site, a report published following the visit stated the school had improved the quality of teaching since the academy’s last inspection in 2013.

Staff were also praised for their caring manner and regular feedback given to pupils regarding their behaviour and learning.

Overall attendance at the academy, which schools eight classes from Nursery to Year 6, is also improving.

The report also praised Gurney Pease schoolchildren and the Ofsted report stated: “Pupils are polite and courteous and talk with pride about their school.”

A new library space created at the site was also acclaimed for fostering a love of reading in the youngsters from an early age.

Mrs Sinclair added: “The report is so positive about our children, their attitude to learning and their behaviour, which is really good.

“It also recognises how well staff know the children and that every child is catered for, whether they have special educational needs or are very able and constantly challenged.”
