THE suspect in a Darlington murder investigation appeared before a judge for the first time today.

Julie Gowling, 43, is alleged to have killed Charlene Walker, who is also known as Jamie Paylor.

The victim was found dead at a house in Louisa Street on Tuesday and was declared dead at the scene.

The results of post-mortem examination are not known, but the 34-year-old suffered a single stab wound.

Ms Gowling, of Louisa Street, made a five-minute appearance at Teesside Crown Court this morning.

She was remanded in custody by Judge Simon Bourne-Arton, QC, until her next appearance in the New Year.

Wearing her pink hair in a ponytail and a light-blue T-shirt, Ms Gowling spoke only to confirm her name.

She will return to court on February 20, when a date will be set for a trial, which could last seven days.

Defence barrister David Lamb said the issues are likely to be how the injury happened and the force used.

Following the discovery of the body at around 12.30pm, police sealed the area with van at either end.

Part of a nearby service road was also cordoned off while investigators took photographs at the scene.

Shortly afterwards, Detective Superintendent Dave Ashton, of Durham Constabulary, confirmed a murder investigation was ongoing.

He said: “Local people can expect to see an increased police presence in the Louisa Street area over the coming days as my officers work to piece together what happened.”

Neighbours were said to be shocked after hearing about the murder.

Anyone with information should contact police on non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 145 of December 6.
