WORKMATES cut and shaved off a colleague's long locks today (Wednesday, October 26) to support the Macmillan Nurses.

Liam Telford, 30, originally of Newton Aycliffe and now living at Middleton-St-George near Darlington, was raising money in memory of his beloved grandmother, Josephine Todd.

He had his hair in plaits and invited co-workers at EE in Darlington to cut off his hair piece by piece as well as taking part in other fund-raising events.

Mr Telford explained he had a target of £500 but expects to eventually raise about £1,300 for the charity.

"I've just been overwhelmed by the support," said Mr Telford, who explained his grandmother, who he calls Nana T and who was 74, had suffered from lung cancer and then a brain tumour before her death in April.

"My Nana T was really like a mam to me. I lived with her and my granddad for quite a few years. Macmillan were just brilliant with us. They really helped my aunty Debbie and my granddad so much, sorting out so many things.

"I just wanted to give something back. I have been growing it since May. It's kind of taken all day to cut it and everyone at EE has been fantastic. It has been a very rough year for my family. My cousin, Paul Ferguson, died in August this year. I'm just so grateful for all the support."

Royal Artillery Regiment Gunner, Ferguson, of Newton Aycliffe, was on leave from the Army when he died in the early hours of Sunday, August 21 in Darlington and a police investigation is on-going.
