INVALUABLE services for cancer sufferers will continue to receive financial support after a dedicated team of Army reserves went above the call of duty.

Members from Darlington’s 50th Northern Signal Squadron, based in Neasham Road, conquered the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

A £1,383 sum raised by the reserves, who are also part of the 32nd Signal Regiment, will fund one Macmillan nurse for 49 hours.

A Macmillan spokeswoman said: “This team of people have aspired to play a small part in this process by raising awareness, generating some much-needed funds and hopefully making a difference.”

The group took on the physical feat in June before finalising funds raised this month.

The challenge had seen some members of the Squadron setting personal challenges to scale Yorkshire’s highest peaks across 26-miles within eight hours while others tackled the 7,000ft climb in around 12 hours.
