A DARLINGTON school’s commitment to the environment has been praised by the Friends of the Earth.

Abbey School was presented with a Clean British Energy Award by the eco-friendly organisation this week.

The award recognises the school’s efforts in investing in renewable solar energy generation and was delivered by FotE representatives during an assembly on Wednesday, September 21.

Matthew Snedker, of Darlington FotE, said: “This country needs schools that are run on sun.

“To find a school that truly values energy efficiency and the need to cut carbon pollution is an inspiration.

“Other schools in the region should use this investment as a template of how they can save money, save the planet and show their pupils how to make the most of clean energy.”

The school’s headteacher, Elaine McCue, said: “I am delighted to accept the award as it clearly recognises Abbey School’s vision to enable children to learn and understand how they can look after our planet and become good citizens.”
