HIGH-flying veterans who protected Britain’s skies during World War II have been reunited at the site of their wartime base between 1941 and 1942.
Eight members of No.76 Squadron RAF were brought together again in Middleton St George after the bomber command were based at the RAF Middleton St George site more than seven decades ago.
The St George Hotel at Durham Tees Valley Airport hosted the veterans who enjoyed a display of WWII air force memorabilia and a lunch in their original officer’s mess over the weekend.
Geoff Hill, Middleton St George Memorial Association chairman, said: “We had eight veterans with the youngest being 92 and the oldest was 97-years-old.
“Of the eight, there was 750 years between them and all were as sharp as needles, telling their stories.”
The Squadron were shown around the St George Hotel and one veteran could recall the room he had stayed in during their time at the RAF bomber command station.
The reunion was organised by RAF instructors, Martin Wintermeyer and Elvis Collins.
