THERE is still time to catch the latest display in the Centre for Local Studies at Darlington’s Crown Street Library.

'Changing Townscape of Darlington - photos from the Valerie Portass Collection' is on show until August 30 and features photographs taken by North-East historian George Flynn in memory of family history enthusiast Valerie Portass.

Ms Portass was devoted to the work of the Darlington Branch of the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) and was also an active member of the Darlington Branch of the Cleveland Family History Society.

Following her death in 2002, a collection was organised in her memory and the proceeds donated to the Centre for Local Studies.

The money raised was used to record the townscape of Darlington as it was in the early 2000s and the collection is a great resource for anyone interested in the history and development of the town.
