A YOUNG mother and her 20-month-old son have escaped serious injury after being hit by a car during a rush-hour incident.

Emergency services were called to McMullen Road, in Darlington at 5.45pm last night after a 21-year-old mother and her baby were knocked over.

The busy commuter route was closed off by officers from Durham Road Policing Unit before an ambulance was called to the scene near Tyre Spot and the entrance to Lingfield Point.

A red Ford Ka was the only vehicle involved in the incident.

A Durham Police spokesman said: “Both mother and child were taken to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough with minor injuries and were discharged after treatment.

“The female driver of the car was uninjured, enquiries are ongoing to establish how the collision occurred.”

The road re-opened after the Ford Ka was moved to a field opposite the entrance to Lingfield Point.

Several police cars and officers remained at the scene while long tailbacks of traffic were cleared at around 7pm.
