DARLINGTON MP Jenny Chapman declared that Jeremy Corbyn had no interest in winning a general election.

Mrs Chapman took to Twitter yesterday to throw her weight behind Labour leader contender Owen Smith.

She tweeted that Smith was the ‘real deal’ and that she did not trust Corbyn with the economy.

Speaking to The Northern Echo last night she said she felt it was time to stop moaning about what people were saying and attempt to speak to them in an open and honest manor.

She admitted that she had found some comments on the internet hurtful and said she needed to right some of the misinformation that has been going around.

She said: “People believe what they read and we need to be a part of that debate to explain what is happening.”

She conceded that Corbyn had reminded members of the party what it meant to be labour but said: “He can’t win.”

She declared: “I want to win but I’m not sure that he is bothered. Irreconcilable differences I think it’s called.”

She said that Corbyn had not come up with any new policies since the leadership challenge had began and said that was ‘unforgivable’.

She said: “Owen is already doing this and is working for a new deal in our region.’’

She revealed that she had asked Mr Smith to run in the last leadership challenge.

She said: “I have been trying to persuade him ever since and I am glad that he has now thrown his hat into the ring.”
