COMMUNITY groups in Darlington are being encouraged to apply for a share of £3.8m of Lottery money.

The Big Lottery Fund is dishing out the money to help groups hold events or activities that will bring people together and celebrate what makes their local community special.

The scheme, called ‘Celebrate’, is now open for Darlington organisations to apply for funding of between £300 and £10,000, to celebrate their local community.

This opportunity comes as a survey by the Big Lottery Fund found that given the chance, 31 per cent of people in the North-East would like to celebrate the people in their neighbourhood, while 30 per cent would like to celebrate their local history.

The research also revealed that almost three quarters of North-East people asked reported that they have never, or cannot remember, ever coming together to celebrate with all their neighbours.

To be eligible for the fund, applicants must be part of a constituted group which has its own bank account.
