THREE people were rescued after becoming trapped on an island in the middle of the River Tees.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue were called to Broken Scar, near Darlington, on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesman for the fire service said the three, believed to be aged 22, 23 and an 11-year-old, had become stranded on a small shallow island in the middle of the river.

A witness told The Northern Echo: "There were a lot of emergency vehicles.

"I didn't see the full rescue, but we were there for an hour and 15 minutes in total, but when we left they were still trapped in an island in the middle of the river."

They were rescued by firefighters using a sled.

Crews from Darlington and the Water Rescue Team from Bishop Auckland were in attendance.
