SCHOOLCHILDREN have been reaping the rewards after taking part in an initiative designed to help youngsters understand the value of money.

Reception pupils at West Park Academy, Darlington, spent a week collecting pennies for good behaviour in the classroom and playground to mark National Money Week.

The children were rewarded for being kind and thoughtful, as well as reading independently and tackling tricky words.

And the end of week, 30 pupils celebrated their savings after being joined by their dads and grandads for a trip to Finbarr’s at West Park Café.

West Park Academy’s deputy vice principal, Helen Dummett, said: “The children have worked really hard to earn their £1, which they used to pay for their drinks and cookies.

“The whole exercise really helped them appreciate the value of money.”

Café manager Sarah Peart added: “We were thrilled to be able to help our local school in a part of Darlington which enjoys a real community spirit. The children were delightful customers.”
