THE LEADER of the Green Party will pay a visit to some of its youngest members this weekend.

In her last trip to the town as party leader, Natalie Bennett will meet with representatives of Darlington’s Young Greens this Saturday (July 2).

Earlier this year, Ms Bennett announced she would not stand for re-election as leader of the Green Party when her term ends in August.

Keen to meet their leader before she leaves the position, Darlington teens Jake Todhunter and Melodie Cherrington invited her to share a meal with other young supporters.

The pair are coordinators for the party’s youth branch in the town and campaign regularly to boost its profile.

Student Mr Todhunter, 17, said: “We support the Greens because the party cares about young people, about the education and about our place in Europe.

“We are honoured to have Natalie Bennett dining with us and we are looking forward to talking to her.

“Her visit to the town marks her legacy as party leader and we hope to tell her how she’s inspiring our generation.”

Ms Bennett replaced Caroline Lucas as leader of the Green Party of England and Wales in 2012 and was re-elected unopposed in 2014.

The meal will take place at an independent restaurant in Darlington from 7pm on Saturday, July 2, with youth and adult party members welcome.
