SCOUTS have been lending a helping hand to those with dementia.
The 12th Darlington Elm Ridge Scouts troop has been learning about the condition as part of the Scout Association’s A Million Hands project.
Recently, an awareness raising session saw the scouts discuss issues around dementia before taking part in practical exercises.
By practising writing with their non-dominant hands, the team of youngsters were introduced to the concept of dementia sufferers often having to use extra levels of concentration to undertake daily tasks.
They also took part in an assault course blindfolded, an activity aimed at teaching them about sensory and visual loss.
The session was delivered by volunteers who train health care staff and student nurses in issues around dementia.
It was organised by the scouts as part of the #YouShape programme, which gives youngsters the opportunity to organise their own activities.
Another event saw the group raise £95 for the Alzheimer’s Society through the a pop-up cake stall.
