LIONS, tigers and bears prowled the streets of Darlington on Saturday (June 25).

A fun-packed weekend in the town began with the arrival of Darlington’s annual Community Carnival.

Visitors to the town centre enjoyed activities in its Market Square on Saturday morning before creatures of all kinds gathered for the Carnival of the Animals parade.

Hundreds of people donned animal guises to snake their way through the streets in a lively procession.

The parade saw drummers lead the colourfully costumed crowd from the Market Square to sunny Stanhope Park.

At the park, a variety of carnival activities were on offer, including live music, games, sports, rides and stalls.

School groups, dance schools, voluntary organisations, community groups and individuals were among those taking part in the parade.

Nine-year-old Millie Smith participated along with fellow dancers from the Joanne Lowe School of Dance.

Her father, Tony Smith, brought the rest of their family to watch.

He said: “It’s the first time Millie’s done this and she’s been doing a lot of practicing.

“Anything like this carnival is great for the town – anything that gets people out and about is good for them, for the town and for businesses.”

Bethany Morris brought four-year-old Archie to enjoy the festivities.

She said: “It’s the first time we’ve been tbut it’s something exciting for him to watch and brings people together.”
