ONE of the oldest athletics club in the country has celebrated its 125th anniversary.

Darlington Harriers, founded in 1891, marked the occasion on Saturday with an all-day event of athletics, entertainment and stalls at Eastbourne Sports Complex.

The club has more than 350 members and has produced Olympic athletes including George Butterfield, who competed in the 1908 Olympics, and Joy Grieveson, who represented Great Britain in Tokyo in 1964.

The morning saw numerous local school races.

The afternoon included an elite mile race, the open mile, and a selection of field events wrapped it up.

Harry Singh completed his 125th marathon, which began at 5am, running over 100 laps of the track. He completed the race in four hours, 46 seconds.

The Harriers have raised more than £20,000 for charity in the last year alone.
