AN EVENT to help refugees will be staged in Darlington this weekend.

Touched by the plights of those fleeing from conflict, a number of the town’s residents have worked together to organise Refugee Aid Night Darlington.

Taking place on Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13, the all-ages event will feature live music, a raffle and hot food.

The food, cooked by Darlington woman Sajna Miah, has been donated by local businesses East West Halal Foods and Ron Clark’s Fruit and Veg.

Organisers include Chris McEvoy, who recently returned from helping refugees in Lesbos, and Ms Miah.

She said: “Chris has been helping to distribute aid in Lesbos and we’re hoping to fill a container to send out there.

“We’ll be collecting clothes, aid and financial donations during the event.

“The reason behind this is to help all of those suffering – to help the helpless.”

The event will take place at St Augustine’s Parish Centre from 7.30pm until 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

Those wishing to donate clothes should ensure they are in good condition, with hats, gloves, scarves and socks especially welcome.

All proceeds will go towards helping refugees fleeing from danger.
